Shire of Halls Creek

Establishment of an Aquatic and Recreation Centre

Commenced: 27 May 2005 Concluded: 30 November 2006

Overview

Situated in the heart of the Kimberley, Halls Creek is the gateway to a range of world renowned natural attractions, including the World Heritage listed Bungle Bungle ranges of Purnululu National Park. However, the community in Halls Creek suffers from significant health issues, limited recreational opportunities, a very low average income rate, high unemployment, and low school retention rates. These factors, along with extreme weather conditions, contribute to high levels of substance misuse. In 2005, the Shire of Halls Creek received funding from the Foundation to put towards the development of a Recreation and Aquatic Centre. The aim of this project was to provide healthy diversionary activities for the local community, particularly young people. The Centre, which opened in 2006, incorporates an outdoor pool, a leisure pool with spas, an undercover outdoor sports area, multi-purpose rooms, and a gymnasium.

Outcomes

Anecdotal evidence suggests that the Centre has had a positive effect on community health, with local health providers reporting noticeable improvements in skin, ear, and eye health. Alcohol and cigarettes are not allowed at the Centre and intoxicated people are turned away from activities. Local schools use a free-pass system known as No School, No Pool, which rewards students for regular school attendance. The Centre regularly hosts community activities such as theatre and dance performances, hip hop workshops, and basketball carnivals which provide young people with opportunities to come together in a safe, structured environment to demonstrate skills, build positive relationships, and share a sense of community pride.
